TWENTY-ONE

The smile on Chad’s face hadn’t faded at all in the last two hours. He was thrilled Ash had agreed to consult on the case. It was true what he’d said to her, he really felt the case moved forward when she was involved. Everywhere he turned he came up against a roadblock in the form of someone else who didn’t think the investigation was worth pursuing. Hartford and New Haven PDs both had no interest in following up. He got that there wasn’t a lot to go on, but every time he shook the tree, something fell out. That alone made him determined to follow through.

He was also saved from coming up with reasons to see Ash. There was an undeniable pull, deep inside of him, to spend more time with the redhead from Downunder. He’d not felt anything remotely like this since Holly. It was strange, exciting, and scary as all hell. He had no idea what he was doing when it came to women. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to know. Part of him felt disloyal to Holly just thinking about another woman, even after all this time. Afterall, he’d fallen in love and married the person he’d wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

Chad shook the train of thought he was on from his head. His focus needed to be on this investigation, and finding out what, if anything, Mark Carter had to do with it. Ash was a competent, skilled and highly experienced detective. She was exactly the right person to bring on board. And if he happened to figure out if he was ready to plunge into the dating game again along the way, well, that would be an added bonus.

“You look pleased with yourself,” said Earl, throwing a brown paper bag on his desk amongst the piles of paperwork.

“Hey, you’ve been out for a while.”

“Yeah, I got a call just as I pulled into the driveway at home. Monteville needed an extra pair of hands to contain a grassfire. Their main unit was over at Norwich dealing with an industrial blaze.”

“So no home-cooked lunch for you.”

He shook his head. “Maggie made me a sandwich.”

“I was about to walk up to the diner for an afternoon coffee. Can I bring you back one?”

“I’d appreciate that.”

Chad picked up his hat and headed for the door. He needed to stretch his legs and the rain had subsided over an hour ago, replaced by welcome sunshine. Hopefully, the rain had headed towards Norwich to help out the fire crew.

“Twice in one day, Chad?” exclaimed Emma when he walked back into the diner.

“I can’t keep away.” He smiled at Emma’s energy. She and George would have been on their feet since before 6am. During the week, they didn’t have extra help in the diner except for Ling. It was impossible to tell how old Ling was. She gave the impression she didn’t speak much English, although Chad thought that was likely a pretense designed to avoid conversation.
